8 Days Marangu Route
The Marangu Route, also known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” is the oldest and most established path on Mount Kilimanjaro. It’s popular for its comfortable hut accommodation and gradual ascent, making it a classic choice for trekkers seeking stunning views and a classic Kilimanjaro experience.
Here’s a detailed 8-day itinerary for the Marangu Route. For a shorter trek, you can skip the acclimatization day at Horombo Hut and head straight to Kibo Hut. This route combines breathtaking scenery, physical challenge, and the opportunity to stand on Africa’s highest peak.
Tour Plan
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and meet our representative for a transfer to your hotel. The hotel offers cozy rooms, hot water, friendly staff, a swimming pool, and Internet access. In the evening, attend a briefing with our managers to prepare for your climb. Private tour packages include shared airport transfers for your group. To avoid extra costs, coordinate your group’s arrival and departure times.
After breakfast at the hotel, transfer to the Marangu Gate, the starting point of the trek. Begin your ascent through lush rainforest, enjoying the rich vegetation and occasional wildlife sightings. The trek to Mandara Hut is a gradual climb and typically takes about 3-4 hours. Upon arrival, settle into the hut, enjoy a warm meal, and prepare for the next day’s hike
After breakfast at Mandara Hut, continue your trek towards Horombo Hut. The path takes you through the moorland zone, offering expansive views and changing landscapes. The hike typically takes around 6-7 hours and includes a gradual ascent. Upon reaching Horombo Hut, settle in, enjoy a warm meal, and take time to acclimatize to the higher altitude.
Enjoy a full day of rest and acclimatization at Horombo Hut. Take advantage of this day to explore the surrounding area, including a hike to the nearby Mawenzi Hut for additional acclimatization. Use this time to relax, stay hydrated, and prepare for the next leg of your trek. A proper rest today will help you adjust to the altitude and make the upcoming climbs more manageable
After breakfast at Horombo Hut, continue your ascent towards Kibo Hut. The trek takes you through the alpine desert zone, where the scenery becomes more rugged and barren. The hike typically takes around 6-7 hours and includes a steady climb. Upon reaching Kibo Hut, settle in and rest. Prepare for the final summit attempt by getting a good night’s sleep and gearing up for the challenging ascent ahead.
Begin your summit attempt from Kibo Hut during the early hours of the morning. The trek to Uhuru Peak involves a challenging climb in the dark, taking around 5-7 hours. At the summit, take in the breathtaking views and celebrate reaching Africa’s highest point. Afterward, descend back to Kibo Hut to rest briefly before continuing your descent to Horombo Hut. The total trek for the day is long and strenuous, typically taking about 8-12 hours. Arrive at Horombo Hut, where you can rest and recover from the demanding day.
After breakfast at Horombo Hut, begin your descent to Mandara Hut. Enjoy the changing scenery as you retrace your steps through the lush rainforest. The hike to Mandara Hut takes about 4-5 hours. From there, continue your descent to Marangu Gate, which takes around 2-3 hours. At the gate, you’ll complete your climbing formalities and receive your certificate of achievement. Transfer back to your hotel to relax and celebrate your successful climb.
