10 DAYS LEMOSHO ROUTE

10 Days Lemosho Route

This 10-day Lemosho route variant is the best option for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro using the Lemosho route as it offers optimum time for acclimatization hence a high summit success rate. The climb from Barranco to Barafu on the 8-day Lemosho route is split into two days, providing for a rest day before the summit attempt. This is critical since summit day starts early, at midnight, and climbers are sleep deprived heading into the mountain’s most difficult day. Climbers will be more rested if they have a short day before the climb. There is 7-day Lemosho route variation but we recommend this 8-day trip because it has an extra day for acclimatization and better chances of making it to the summit.

Tour Plan

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and meet our representative for a transfer to your hotel. The hotel offers cozy rooms, hot water, friendly staff, a swimming pool, and Internet access. In the evening, attend a briefing with our managers to prepare for your climb. Private tour packages include shared airport transfers for your group. To avoid extra costs, coordinate your group’s arrival and departure times.

A guide and mountain support crew will meet you at the hotel. You’ll then drive for about 3–4 hours to Kilimanjaro National Park’s Londorossi Gate. After getting your climbing permits and registering with the search and rescue service, you’ll continue by off-road vehicles to a drop-off point at 3,610 meters (11,841 feet). Hike to your first camp Mti Mkubwa Camp. By the time you arrive, the mountain crew will have set up the tents and started preparing dinner.

We continue on the trail leading out of the rain forest and into a savannah of tall grasses, heather and volcanic rock draped with lichen beards. As we ascend through the lush rolling hills and cross several streams, we reach the Shira Ridge before dropping gently down to Shira 1 Camp. Here we catch our first glimpse of Kibo across the plateau.

We explore the Shira Plateau for a full day. It is a gentle walk east on moorland meadows towards Shira 2 Camp. Then we divert from the main trail to Moir Hut, a little used site on the base of Lent Hills. A variety of walks are available on Lent Hills making this an excellent acclimatization opportunity. Shira Plateau is one of the highest plateaus on earth.

We begin the day climbing up a ridge and then head southeast towards the Lava Tower – a 300 ft tall volcanic rock formation. We descend down to Barranco Camp through the strange but beautiful Senecio Forest to an altitude of 13,000 ft. Although you begin and end the day at the same elevation, the time spent at higher altitude is very beneficial for acclimatization.

Wake up early for a hearty breakfast and start climbing Barranco Wall. Leave camp early to avoid crowds. The wall climb is easy and takes about an hour. Rest and take photos with the Kibo volcano backdrop. Hike to Karanga Camp, which involves several ascents and descents, with guides setting a comfortable pace. After arriving, enjoy a warm lunch. Later, complete an acclimatization hike toward Barafu Camp, gaining 300 meters (984 feet) in altitude before descending back to Karanga Camp.

In the morning, enjoy a warm and hearty breakfast before hiking to Barafu Summit Camp, the starting point for your final ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,336 ft). Our team will set up camp in advance, so your tents and sleeping bags will be ready upon arrival. Use the rest of the day to relax and rest before the night summit

While the climb is technically straightforward, high altitude can make even simple tasks challenging. To ensure your safety, a personal guide will accompany each pair of climbers. After reaching Uhuru Peak, you can visit a nearby glacier if you wish. Then, return to Barafu Camp for a 2-hour rest before continuing your descent to Millennium Camp.

Millennium Camp is set in a lush rainforest. Wake up feeling relieved and satisfied after reaching the summit. Enjoy a warm breakfast before heading to the park’s exit at Mweka Gate. After your descent, the group will gather to congratulate you and share thoughts in the guestbook. Finally, receive your commemorative certificate at our office before being transferred back to the hotel.

After an early breakfast, Transfer to Kilimanjaro airport for your departure flight back home.
